2. Sermon on the Mount Secrets - Are the Servants Ready?

Jesus always had a reason for His teachings, and generally it was to coach us into a better relationship with Him and those we need to influence. In Matthew 24 we see His almost-frightening teaching about the end times. He concluded this teaching with the following:
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, “My master is staying away a long time," And he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:42-51)
This conclusion, especially the sudden transition in verse 45, impacted me as the revelation started to unfold. One moment Jesus was still talking about the end times, his return to the earth and things to be expected and the next He was talking about a good and wicked servant.
Why would He have used it in this context? He seems to be concerned about the servants’ behaviour in the absence of the Master. Would they be concerned about that which the Master is concerned about—the Master’s estate and the care for the other servants? Would they put Jesus and His cause first, or would they use their power to abuse others for their own benefit?
This is why we see the stern warnings mentioned above as well as the illustration of the two types of servants and their behaviour. He is talking about motives and attitudes. While we live by grace on earth, it seems the Lord is patient, but judging from the warnings above, we have something to be concerned about when Jesus returns. We need to know what is important to the Master, so we can have everything ready the way He likes it when He returns.
In order to accomplish that, we need to take note of the two types of servants in the illustration above and their relevance to end-time prophecy. They both were servants; in other words, they were what we would now call Christians. Their task was to give the other servants food at the proper time.
The master was away, and they were responsible for his property, including all his servants. Jesus placed these servants into the context of end-time hardships. So what are we saying? The good and faithful servant cares for his fellow servants, especially in the tough times to come. The master is the Lord Jesus who went away for a time. The food is the Word of God and any other support needed for the servants to do the master’s bidding, which is a Christian’s biblical responsibility.
All Christians (servants) are in one way or another responsible for their fellow servants’ spiritual care, even if it is only for one’s children or for a friend. Although this support does not apply only to hard times, we will all have someone to support when hard times come. According to the Bible, though, obedient disciples will often have difficult times. “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12), and in John 16:33:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Nobody is born a faithful and good servant. Training is provided. In the rest of this series we will therefore take one of the most important teachings of Jesus as our training. We will attempt to get right to the roots of understanding exactly what Jesus meant when he taught it. To accomplish that, we will look at the Sermon on the Mount quite intensively. The first twelve verses are called the Beatitudes. Rightly so—it is all about attitude. Although the word “beatitude” does not really have the same meaning as attitude, it is true that these chapters in the book of Matthew and all of life are about attitude.
What is the motivation behind our actions? What do we desire? If our attitudes and motivation are self-centered, we will not be “good” servants. Therefore, let us develop the right attitudes from the Lord Himself. In the next posting we'll hear what He is about to say.

1. Sermon on the Mount Secrets - Introduction

Introduction

What’s the purpose of being a Christian – the purpose of your life? What’s your gift? What are you good at?
Whenever we look at our lives, read the Bible, and walk with God, we must always ask ourselves, “Is there more to it?” The Word of God is living and active; therefore, we can expect more from the Bible than we see at face value.
My walk with the Lord began when I was very young. I grew up with a traditional church in South Africa and loved the Lord as far back as I can remember. Even at primary school age I thought much about the character of the Lord, about Biblical truths and Biblical reality. I remember how I would stand during Sunday service prayer, adding my stuttering prayers to those of the grown-ups.
Yet I was searching. One day, as my family drove past a few cattle in a meadow, I thought; you cattle have such a boring life. It’s just eating, drinking, and sleeping all the time. Then it occurred to me: How’s my life any different? It’s just eating, drinking, sleeping, playing, and working . . . and then death. What comes after that? What’s the purpose of my life?
My parents’ church didn’t preach salvation through rebirth. Therefore, in my teenage years, I couldn’t understand why I always felt so guilty during Sunday services and forever had to repent of my sins, only to have them and the guilt back on Monday.
At the time I didn’t know I wasn’t yet a new creation through rebirth. During a Bible study group meeting at school, however, with the help of the teacher who led it, I had the privilege of inviting Jesus into my life and become born again. After that, the  Bible all of a sudden opened up for me. I had such a clear understanding.
The Lord had His plan for me in place. At the right time, He sent a man directly to me to explain baptism and not long after that, I learned of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. A few years later, a company of prophets came to our church and invited members to make appointments to meet with them. Being a skeptic, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but these people knew enough about my past to encourage me to listen. The most significant thing they said to me was that I should study the Word because God wants to use me as a teacher.
In the years following, I attended two separate evening Bible schools -- one had a spiritual emphasis, and the other taught theology and ministry. I also attended every course our church offered, such as evangelism, leadership, and children’s work.
The most helpful training I received, though, was in the Lord’s school of life. I loved Him dearly, but was one of His difficult children whom He had to put through many trials to shape. Like a starling, I would fly against the same window time and time again. These trials He prepared for me proved invaluable in my ministry and are reflected in my works.
I also launched into street evangelism, street children's ministry, and ministry among motorcyclists and hospital staff and patients.
My teaching gift became manifest when I was the discipleship coordinator for a hospital mission and decided to write a monthly newsletter. It became a monthly teaching that I wrote over a period of seven years. This book was born from those writings.
You also have a gift. As my gift is teaching, yours may be one of those mentioned in Romans 12:6-8, or it may be a specific talent or even intercession. Everybody has a gift, and with the gift comes the anointing. I hope to assist in equipping Christians to serve the Kingdom of God by encouraging them to maximize their gifts.
How does God want us to obey? When I was in military camp during the Angolan war, the Lord opened a door for me to minister to the troops. I was there for three months, and during that time I had complete freedom of speech as well as full use of the chaplain’s facilities, even though I was an ordinary Christian. I shared the Gospel and presented Bible studies. Many young men got saved and received initial discipling. Although the official religion in that setting did not acknowledge adult baptism, I baptized many new believers.
Today I realize I did not think these things through at the time. I simply did what came to me, and the Lord did wonderful work on that base. It was not military policy that non-official ministers should work as chaplains, yet the door was wide open. The Lord wanted to reach those men, I was naive enough to barge in “where angels fear to tread”, and He made maximum use of the opportunity. This should form the foundation of each Christian’s walk with the Lord—we should not reason, but just obey.
Jesus went to much effort to build His Kingdom, and we should honor Him by working hard as well. It’s like an entrepreneur who built a business to a certain point and then left it in the hands of managers. What are the managers going to do with the business?
In the posts to follow, you’ll find much more to Jesus’ commands than what initially meets the eye. Practical applications and examples make them easier to be understood.
You may have read these chapters in the book of Matthew and found that certain things did not make sense. You probably had no clue how to apply them to your life. Once you’ve read this series, you should have a better understanding of this important section of the Bible.

The rest of the Series from John Chapters 14-17

Dear reader, I've been silent for a long time. This is because I was working on another project. But now I'm back with powerful articles you might find revealing.

We've been busy with reposting teaching articles from John chapters 14 -17. To continue with that will take a long time and I would love to start with a new series on the Sermon on the Mount, where you'll find challenging revelations.

I, therefore, place the links to the remainder of the John 14-17 reposted articles below for you to read at your leisure.

May the Lord bless you.
