Using Your Senses

Good morning.

This follows on from the spiritual warfare series.

How do you experience the Lord - can you see Him, do you hear His voice, do you feel His presence? Are you aware of the other spiritual forces? Would you recognise them when they approach you?

We live in a world where all five our senses are necessary – smell, taste, see, hear and touch/feel - but we don’t live in the physical world only. When we are in a relationship with the Lord, we need to enter the spiritual realm to have fellowship with Him. “‘God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth’ (John 4:24).” In order to sense activity in the spiritual realm, we need to use our senses as well: “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him (Psalm 32:8)! So Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise (John 5:19).’ And he said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven (Luke 10:18).’ ‘Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God (John 8:47).’ That they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us (Acts 17:27). We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him (12 John 5:18).”

How do we use our senses in this realm? When you read a novel you need imagination to see the story in your mind. The Lord reveals Himself to us by letting us feel, hear and see His presence in our imagination. He wants to be real to us and therefore we need to refine our senses to become aware of Him. We will never see what He looks like, but we can see what He shows us. In your imagination He reveals to you what He’s like and what He is doing (John 14:21). The same applies to the evil forces. One can feel their presence when you walk into an evil place and sense when a person acts deceptively, feeling the presence of evil in him. I’ve even heard testimony of a vile smell in the presence of evil. One can also see what’s coming.

The point is we need to concentrate on sensing the spiritual realm. When you pray you need to focus into your spirit to sense God. When you do that, He will reveal Himself as well as any evil activity so you can be warned. I personally don’t really need a physical inner room for prayer, since my real inner room is my spirit. When I’m in serious prayer I cut off my awareness of my surroundings and enter the presence of the Lord in my spirit.

How about you?

Lord, please teach me how to sense the spiritual realm.
